David closed the sketchbook on the table with a frown. He had seen Samantha’s standard drawings of bowls of fruit and bouquets of flowers. Though they were competent, they had shown no true artistic talent and it was clear to him that Samantha had been merely following the instructions of a drawing master. Even more surprisingly, there had been no drawings of birds on the pages of the sketchbook, and Lady Honoria had written that birds were Olivia’s favorite subject. Their omission was startling and David vowed to ask Samantha about it.

Samantha entered the Drawing Room several minutes later. She was dressed in a fetching, sea-green gown and she smiled as she walked over to the table to join him.

“I am glad you are here, Samantha.” David was frowning as he turned to her. “I have been perusing your sketchbook and I was surprised to find no drawings of birds.”

Samantha sighed. Birds again. Olivia’s passion was becoming a thorn in her side. “You are correct, David. There are no birds in my sketchbook.”

“Why is this, Samantha?”

“Because I did not wish to spend my entire time in London at work.” Samantha gave what she hoped was a convincing smile. “You see, painting birds is my passion and if I allowed myself to become involved in that pursuit, it should quickly claim all of my attention.”

David nodded. “I see. Then you did not bring your nature portfolio or any of your sketches?”

“I brought nothing.” Samantha smiled again. “My painting master has my work, and will keep it secure for me. These sketches are merely to satisfy Grandmama’s opinion that a lady should spend a small portion of her time in artistic pursuits. I also do needlework, though it bores me dreadfully, because it pleases her.”

“What pleases you, Samantha?” David’s voice was kind.

“Spending time with you,” Samantha answered quite honestly. “But I should prefer it to be in a rural setting. In spite of all the excitements to be found in the city, I find I miss riding through the dawn to meet the sun and hearing the rustling of wild creatures stirring in the wood. I miss the way the pines sigh as the wind blows through their branches and … and I miss the greetings of neighbors as they hail me from their fields and wave their straw hats in greeting. Some complain that life in the country is lonely, but I have never found it so.”

David nodded. Samantha had voiced his thoughts exactly. “How could one be lonely, surrounded by such a multitude of life?”

“You must love the country almost as much as I do.” Samantha turned to him in amazement.

“Perhaps even more so.” David reached out to touch the velvety softness of her cheek. He traced the path a tear of longing had made, and then he smiled at her. “You are homesick, Samantha. And I must confess that I also long for the country.”

Samantha nodded. “It is true. I had thought that the excitement of London would cause me to forget the pleasures of a rustic life, but it has not.
